ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION
Erectile Dysfunction Screening & Treatment in Alton
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection suitable for sexual activity. It is a common concern and can have a number of possible contributing factors.
At Alton Pain Clinic, our GP service provides confidential erectile dysfunction screening and assessment. Your consultation gives you the opportunity to discuss your symptoms, medical history and concerns before exploring appropriate treatment options.
What Is Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction can involve difficulty getting an erection, maintaining an erection or achieving an erection that is firm enough for sexual activity.
Occasional difficulties can happen to many men. However, persistent or recurring problems may warrant a medical assessment.
What Can Cause ED?
ED can have physical, psychological or lifestyle-related causes. Possible contributing factors can include:
- Cardiovascular and circulatory conditions
- Diabetes
- Hormonal factors
- Certain medications
- Alcohol and smoking
- Stress and anxiety
- Relationship or psychological factors
- Other underlying health conditions
Because there can be several possible causes, an appropriate assessment is an important part of understanding your symptoms.
Men’s Health Screening & Assessment
Erectile dysfunction (ED) can have a range of causes, including physical health conditions, medications, lifestyle factors and psychological factors. Our GP service provides confidential ED screening and assessment to help understand your symptoms, identify relevant health factors and discuss appropriate management options.
1. Initial assessment
We discuss your symptoms, medical history, current medications, lifestyle factors and sexual health to build a clearer picture of your concerns.
2. Cardiovascular & general health screening
ED can sometimes be associated with underlying cardiovascular or metabolic health factors. Where clinically appropriate, your GP may recommend relevant health checks and blood tests, which may include:
- Blood pressure and cardiovascular risk assessment
- Blood glucose and/or HbA1c
- Cholesterol and lipid profile
- Full blood count
- Liver and kidney function tests, where appropriate
3. Hormonal assessment
Hormonal factors can contribute to erectile difficulties. Depending on your symptoms and clinical assessment, hormonal testing may be recommended and could include:
- Testosterone
- SHBG
- LH and FSH
- Prolactin
- Thyroid function
- Other hormone tests where clinically indicated
4. Prostate health assessment
Where appropriate, prostate health may also be considered as part of your assessment. PSA testing may be discussed depending on your age, symptoms, individual risk factors and clinical assessment.
Management Options for Erectile Dysfunction
Treatment depends on the underlying cause and your individual circumstances.
Following assessment, your GP can discuss appropriate options with you. At Alton Pain Clinic, men’s health treatment options include focused shockwave therapy and the P-Shot, where appropriate.
Focused Shockwave Therapy for ED
Focused shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses targeted acoustic waves delivered to specific areas. It is offered as a treatment option for men experiencing erectile dysfunction.
During treatment, a specialised device is applied to the treatment area to deliver focused acoustic waves. The procedure is performed externally and does not involve surgery.
Before starting treatment, your GP will assess your symptoms and medical history to determine whether focused shockwave therapy is appropriate for you. They will also explain the treatment process and what you can expect during your course of care.
P-Shot for ED
The P-Shot (Priapus Shot) is a procedure involving platelet-rich plasma (PRP) prepared from a small sample of your own blood.
During the procedure, a blood sample is taken and processed to prepare the PRP. The prepared PRP is then administered as part of the P-Shot treatment.
The P-Shot may be considered for men experiencing erectile difficulties following an appropriate clinical assessment. Your GP will discuss your medical history, symptoms and suitability before recommending treatment.

What is an ED screening?
ED screening involves discussing your symptoms, medical history and potential contributing factors with a GP. Further assessment may be recommended where appropriate.
Is erectile dysfunction a normal part of ageing?
ED becomes more common with age, but persistent erectile difficulties should not simply be assumed to be an inevitable part of getting older.
Can ED be linked to other health conditions?
Yes. ED can sometimes be associated with underlying physical health conditions, which is why an appropriate assessment can be useful.
