FACET JOINT INJECTIONS

Chronic back or neck pain can often be traced to inflammation in the small joints that connect the vertebrae of the spine, known as the facet joints.

At Alton Pain Clinic, we offer facet joint injections to provide targeted relief from pain caused by these inflamed joints. Using ultrasound-guided techniques, our clinicians deliver precise, minimally invasive treatment designed to restore mobility and improve your quality of life.

  • What Are Facet Joint Injections?

Facet joint injections involve administering a combination of corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory medication) and a local anaesthetic directly into the affected spinal joints. The corticosteroid helps reduce inflammation, while the anaesthetic provides immediate pain relief.

These injections are typically used to diagnose and treat pain in the neck (cervical spine), mid-back (thoracic spine), and lower back (lumbar spine). When inflammation in the facet joints causes pain, stiffness, or referred discomfort to the hips, buttocks, or shoulders, this treatment can help significantly.

    Conditions Treated

Facet joint injections may be recommended for conditions such as:

    • Facet joint syndrome
    • Chronic lower back pain
    • Neck pain or stiffness
    • Pain radiating from the spine into the limbs
    • Arthritic changes in the spine

If you experience persistent back or neck pain that worsens when bending, twisting, or extending, facet joint inflammation may be the underlying cause. This procedure can help identify and treat it effectively.

The Procedure

At Alton Pain Clinic, we prioritise comfort and precision. During your appointment, our clinician will first assess your symptoms and may perform an ultrasound scan to identify the specific joints causing pain.

The skin over the injection site is cleaned and sterilised. Using ultrasound guidance, the clinician inserts a fine needle into the targeted facet joint and delivers the corticosteroid and anaesthetic mixture directly where it’s needed most. The entire procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes, and most patients can return home shortly afterwards.

Pain relief may begin within a few days, with inflammation continuing to subside over the following weeks.

The Benefits of Facet Joint Injections

  • Targeted pain relief for chronic back and neck conditions
  • Reduced inflammation in affected joints
  • Improved mobility and flexibility
  • Minimally invasive procedure with no hospital stay
  • Diagnostic insight, confirming whether the facet joints are the pain source

This treatment can be particularly beneficial when other conservative options, such as physiotherapy or oral medications, have not provided sufficient improvement.

What our patients say

FAQs

How long does pain relief last?

Relief may last from several weeks to several months, depending on your condition and response to the injection.

Most patients describe it as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. The local anaesthetic numbs the area quickly, and ultrasound guidance ensures precision.

It’s best to arrange for someone to drive you home, as you may experience temporary numbness or mild weakness.

Light activity is generally fine the next day, but avoid strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours.

Side effects are uncommon but can include temporary soreness, bruising, or mild swelling at the injection site.
