MSK Knee Ultrasound

Knee pain can be caused by a wide range of joint, tendon, ligament, or soft tissue issues. When symptoms persist or the cause is unclear, accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment.

At Alton Pain Clinic, our MSK (musculoskeletal) knee ultrasound provides real-time, detailed imaging to help identify the source of knee pain and guide the most appropriate treatment plan.

What Is an MSK Knee Ultrasound?

An MSK knee ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce clear images of the soft tissues in and around the knee joint. Unlike X-rays, which only show bones, ultrasound allows us to assess tendons, ligaments, muscles, bursae, joint lining, and fluid collections.

This type of imaging is particularly useful for identifying conditions that affect the knee’s supporting structures and for monitoring recovery over time. Because the scan is dynamic, we can observe structures as you move your knee, helping detect problems that may not be visible on static imaging.

Conditions Assessed with Knee Ultrasound

An MSK knee ultrasound may be used to evaluate:

  • Tendon injuries, such as quadricep or patellar tendinopathy
  • Ligament sprains and soft tissue strains
  • Bursitis, including prepatellar or pes anserine bursitis
  • Joint effusions (excess fluid in the knee)
  • Inflammation of the joint lining (synovitis)
  • Soft tissue swelling or cysts, such as Baker’s cysts

Ultrasound can also support guided procedures, including joint injections or fluid aspiration, ensuring precise and effective treatment.

What to Expect During the Scan

Your appointment begins with a discussion about your symptoms, activity levels, and any previous imaging or treatment. During the scan, a small handheld probe is moved over the knee using a water-based gel. You may be asked to bend or straighten your knee so the clinician can assess how structures move in real time.

The scan is painless, takes around 15–30 minutes, and the results are available immediately. Once the scan is complete, your clinician will explain the findings clearly and discuss the recommended next steps.

Benefits of MSK Knee Ultrasound

  • Fast and accurate diagnosis
  • Real-time assessment of knee movement
  • Non-invasive and radiation-free
  • Immediate results and feedback
  • Helps guide targeted treatment and rehabilitation

By identifying the precise cause of pain, ultrasound helps avoid unnecessary treatments and ensures your care is focused and effective.

Supporting Your Recovery

An MSK knee ultrasound is often the first step toward a personalised treatment plan. Whether the next stage involves physiotherapy, injection therapy, or activity modification, having a clear diagnosis helps speed up recovery and improve outcomes.

At Alton Pain Clinic, we combine advanced imaging with expert clinical assessment to support long-term knee health and confident movement.
