MSK Shoulder Ultrasound

When shoulder pain persists, even after rest and physiotherapy, diagnosing the exact source becomes crucial. At Alton Pain Clinic, our MSK shoulder ultrasound offers a modern and non-invasive way to visualise the soft tissues and joints around the shoulder, helping us pinpoint the cause of your discomfort and plan targeted treatment.

What Is an MSK Shoulder Ultrasound?

An MSK shoulder ultrasound uses high-resolution imaging to inspect the soft-tissue structures of the shoulder, including the rotator cuff tendons, bursae, the long head of the biceps tendon, the glenohumeral joint capsule and adjacent ligaments.

Unlike standard X-rays, ultrasound allows real-time, dynamic assessment of how these structures move, which means we can see things like impingement or tendon sliding that may not be apparent in static imaging.

Because many shoulder problems arise from tendon irritation, bursitis, or joint capsule changes, the ability to visualise these live helps us understand why your pain is occurring and how best to treat it.

Why Have A Shoulder Ultrasound?

If you’re experiencing any of the following, a shoulder ultrasound might be appropriate:

  • Persistent shoulder pain, especially when lifting your arm or reaching overhead
  • A feeling of catching or clicking when moving your shoulder
  • Stiffness and limited range of motion, particularly in external rotation
  • Previous injuries (such as rotator cuff strain or AC-joint damage) that aren’t improving

Using ultrasound helps us make targeted decisions, for example, whether a guided injection is the right next step or a specific tendon needs focus in your rehab programme.

The Appointment Process

Your clinician will begin with a thorough consultation: discussing your history, how your pain behaves, any previous treatments, and what movements provoke symptoms. Then the ultrasound scan is performed using a small handheld probe and conductive gel over your shoulder. You may be asked to move your arm or hold a position while the scan captures the structures in motion.

The procedure is comfortable, typically taking around 15–25 minutes depending on complexity. There’s no radiation, no needles (unless an intervention is required later), and you’ll receive feedback immediately. Following the scan, your clinician will explain what we found and discuss next steps: this may include physiotherapy, strengthening, activity modification, or ultrasound-guided injection treatment.

Benefits of Shoulder Ultrasound at Alton Pain Clinic

  • Diagnosis clarity: identify tendon tears, bursitis, impingement or joint degeneration with precision.
  • Dynamic assessment: visualise movement-related issues like tendon catching under the acromion.
  • Non-invasive & safe: no radiation, minimal discomfort, immediate result.
  • Streamlined care: from scan to treatment discussion within the same visit.
  • Guided treatment readiness: if an injection is required, we already have the visual data to plan accuracy.

FAQs

Does the ultrasound scan hurt?

No. The procedure is painless; you may feel light pressure from the probe, but no needles unless an intervention is subsequently planned.

No, you can book directly with us. We’ll review your symptoms and decide if the ultrasound is appropriate.

Immediately. Your clinician will review the images during your appointment and discuss findings and next steps on the same day.

Not always. Many shoulder conditions can be diagnosed effectively with ultrasound. If a more complex investigation is needed, we’ll advise you.
